What Defines A Writer ?

I was at a party once and a man I didn’t know was asked what he ‘did’. He answered, ‘I’m a writer, although I pay my bills by fixing cars.’

It was a comment that struck a cord with me. So often we are pigeon-holed by our career paths and not by our passions. Some people are lucky enough to have a passion that pays their bills, but sadly, most of us are not.

To me, being a writer is a state of mind. Even when I’m not physically writing I’m still a writer, because regardless of what ever I am thinking, behind that thought there is nearly always another thought from a writer’s perspective. When I’m dishing up dinner descriptive food phrases tumble through my mind; when I’m going for a walk I’m defining sounds and views; when I’m contemplating my events for the week I’m wondering how my characters would handle the social niceties.

The books you read, the movies you watch, the blogs you visit, the conversations you start, your thoughts - these will always tell more about who you truly are than any paying job.

You don’t have to spend every hour writing to be a writer, you just have to look at the world through a writer’s eyes and write when you can.
