Discrimination
by Nicola
(South Australia)
"How can my application be refused, I fit all the criteria?"
"We have had a lot of applicants, several of whom are better suited to the position."
"Internal or external applicants? Who are you going to give the job to?"
"Justin, I am not going to discuss other applicants with you. Look, you are very good at what you do. Your work is of great value to the organisation, so we'd like to keep you in your current position."
"But I can do more. I don't want to be stuck in the backroom doing research for the rest of my life. I want to get out and meet people. Deal with our clients face to face."
Harold looked down at the papers on his desk, studiously avoiding Justin's eyes.
"That's it isn't it? So much for being an equal opportunity employer! You know I am the most qualified around here."
"Justin, please understand it's nothing personal. It's just that our clients have expectations too."
"And I don't fit the mould?"
"Look. We are very supportive of what you are going through. I believe the organisation has been very compassionate in the granting of leave for your treatment sessions."
"Well, yes. I grant you that. But when do I get the chance to be me? To follow my dreams, fulfil my ambitions? Are you going to hold me back because of what I look like? You can't do that you know."
"No, Justin, of course not. It's as I have said before … "
"If I were to wear a suit and tie would that help? Hmm? If I looked the part? Do I have to live a lie to satisfy you?"
"Would you?"
"No. I've lived a lie most of my life. It's important that I can be myself."
"Justin, I am going to have to terminate this conversation. I am not considering you for the position."
"So what about when I've finished the hormonal treatment? Or am I going to have to wait until after the final operation? Will you give me advancement when I have the 'e' on the end of my name?"
