A Lifetime of Stories

An online writing course unique to Writing to Inspire and facilitated by Elizabeth Bezant.

All of us carry with us a lifetime of stories. This, perhaps, is one of the reasons that so many people have started writing their autobiographies. But what do you do if you don’t have time to write about your whole life or only want to write about small sections of it?

That is where this course, A Lifetime Of Stories, comes in.

Stories about events or times in our lives can tell others so much, not least of all our character, our outlook, our personal history and our unique place in this world. This I think is one of the main reasons for writing down the stories, so that there will always be a legacy, no matter what. A written story can always be read, even when it’s difficult or impossible for two people to share their stories over a cup of tea or a glass of something stronger.

It’s important to bear this in mind when writing your stories, because you aren’t just telling any old story, you’re sharing a piece of your life. The reader is reading as much because they want to know more about you, as they are because it’s an interesting story. Therefore the skill of writing snippets of your life is to write a strong, well-rounded story while at the same time weave ‘you’ in and between every line. So this is exactly what I’ll cover in this course, all you need to do is decide on the story you want to tell and we will go from there.

To me autobiographical writing has always been like a beaded necklace: each single story is a different size bead, but when they are all strung together you have the complete circle of your life.

Of course, it’s entirely up to you how long the string of stories is. You might want to simply write a handful of your most important stories; the moments that changed your life perhaps. Alternatively, you might want to share every part of your life with your reader. Both options are fine and the choice is entirely dependant on your inclination, time and focus.

Even if you’re planning to later write your entire autobiography, why not write the important stories first? At least that way you will have more fun and ensure the important bits are written even if you get distracted.
