Love What You Do, The Money Will Follow

Love what you do, the money will follow; this was the focal point of a discussion I had recently. Or more specifically the topic of the conversation was: is this statement a truth or just wishful thinking?

To me the concept behind the statement is that if you really enjoy doing something it will constantly be on your mind. As such, you will always be aware of relevant ideas, markets and possibilities. In other words that project will become your life, consciously and sub-consciously, and you will love working on it.

No doubt there are people out there who stand on both sides of the fence, those who believe the quote and those who believe it’s just an idea fed to us by motivational speakers.

My thoughts following the conversation are that the statement is true, although with provisos. If you love writing you can definitely make money from it, that bit I have proven. Also, you will make more money from it if you’re constantly looking at the world through the eyes of a writer.

The proviso, though, is that you must also follow through on your dream. It’s no good absorbing the sensory images of a tourist hotspot if you never find the time to write the feature article. Equally important is the need not just to come up with the perfect picture book, but to come up with a book that’s commercially viable.

So, yes, I believe the phrase is true, do what you love and the money will follow. However, the real question is, do you and are you going to give it a try?

(The phrase comes from a book with the same title
