Strengthen your senses
by Elizabeth
(CEO of Writing to Inspire)
This is one of my favourite writing exercises, not just because it will improve your descriptive writing, but also because it will help you find your primary sense and the one you need to work on most.
Go to a place and do something there that will provide you with plenty for your senses to absorb. For example: Have a cup of coffee in a busy coffee shop. Enjoy a picnic at the beach. Eat an ice-cream at the movies. Share a Sunday roast.
These are great activities because you?ll be able to use all your senses, but if you prefer you can try the exercise in different situations, just be aware that the concept requires stimulation for your sight, smell, hearing, feel and taste.
STEP BY STEP Divide a piece of paper into five columns. Write a different sense at the top of each of column. Under each heading list what you are noticing with that sense.
Chances are the lists you end up with will be of different lengths. This may be because of the activity/location you picked, but it?s more likely due to you having a tendency to rely on one sense more than another, most of us do.
The great thing about this exercise is that not only will you find yourself absorbing all kinds of information to use later in your writing, but you?ll also recognise your weaker and stronger senses, something that will in turn allow you to work on them.
