Week 1 Challenge
by Jane
(Dubbo NSW)
The cold wind howls outside, whipping debris into colourful swirls. I tuck myself up on the lounge, hot mug of coffee by my elbow. Beside the coffee is the old biscuit tin. I remove the lid slowly, scenting the room with spicy ginger biscuits. They provide the perfect foil to the coffee.
The coffee is perfect: just hot enough without burning my mouth. The ginger crunch reminds me of growing up, of how ginger seemed like something the grown-ups liked. Now I find it delightful.
I open the current book for my book group, settling in to enjoy the crisp biscuits. The phone rings but I resist the urge to pick it up. It is mellow in my world, too tranquil to think seriously of returning to the rest of the world. I crunch the biscuit, sip the coffee, slipping into the book. The story is set in the previous century, in different times.
The door bell chimes, pulling me from my reverie. My indulgent interlude is over too soon for my liking.

I will miss you.’ Yvonne, Australia
