Week 7: Jack loves Claude
by Andy Smerdon
(Brisbane, Queensland, Australia)
Jack was a queen. He was actually considered to be the king of the queens and he was an absolute ace on the dance floor. He currently lived in a small apartment on the western slope of butte Montmartre, in the shadow of Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, one of Paris’ most beautiful buildings. His partner Claude was also a dancer and he was also extremely handy with a needle and thread. The thing Jack liked most about Claude was his infectious laugh; he could watch him laugh all day. Claude was beautiful and Jack was madly in love.
They would spend their spare time wandering through the streets around Montmartre, looking in every haberdashery they came upon and hoping to find the ultimate feather boa, the most outrageous cloth or the sequin to outshine all sequins.
Could it have been ten years ago that he had left his home town of Brisbane, Jack thought. He clearly remembered the 3 years of study at the Australian Dance Institute, where he achieved distinctions in contemporary as well as classical dance. He had slaved as a barista every evening and saved all his money. His plan to have enough cash to support himself for six months without a job, had worked perfectly and the struggle had been worth it. He had his first and only audition four months after arriving here and only a week after meeting Claude. His head still spins when he thinks of the speed with which it all happened from then. Claude and he moved in together, the show was a hit, he was a hit.
On nights like this, after another great show, he watched Claude work the party crowd and his heart nearly exploded with joy. He was indeed a happy queen.
